Psalm 4

a paraphrase

Have mercy now and hear my cry,
God of my righteousness,
for you have been my saving help
when I’ve been in distress.

How long will wicked, worthless men
who love deceit and lies
make mockery of honour and
God’s honoured ones despise?

But God has kept me for himself;
he hears me when I call.
He’ll save me from men’s treachery;
I’ll trust to him my all.

In angry thoughts then, do not sin—
wait, O my soul, on God;
be still and give your heart to him,
reflect in solitude.

Don’t doubt that he will smile on you
and show you every good:
more joy than harvest, oil, or wine
will be your daily food.

Therefore I will lie down in peace;
in God’s peace I will sleep,
for God it is, and God alone,
who shall me safely keep.
