Akeldama
a song
Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers. Therefore that field has been called “the Field of Blood” to this day.
Matthew 27:3–8
There is a field in Judah—
a field that belonged to a potter—
and they bought it for thirty pieces of silver,
the price of the blood of the Lamb.
There is a field in Judah,
and they call it Akeldama,
and they made it a burial place for the stranger
bought with the blood of the Lamb.
And I was a stranger to God and his people,
a stranger to Abraham’s covenant kin;
oh, I was a stranger till one day in April
the Lamb of God died for to pay for my sin.
There is a field in Judah,
bought with the price of betrayal
on the day when the clay got revenge on the Potter
and the Shepherd was slain like a lamb.
And I was a stranger to God and his people,
a stranger to Abraham’s covenant kin;
oh, I was a stranger till one day in April
the Lamb of God died for to pay for my sin.
So hey, when I
go down to die,
lay me in Akeldama!
Old Sheol
won’t see my soul:
I’ll stop in Akeldama.
The Lamb of God
in a “field of blood”
has made a resting place for me.
‘Cause I was a stranger to God and his people,
a stranger to Abraham’s covenant kin;
oh, I was a stranger till that day in April
when the Lamb of God died…
…the Lamb of God died and gathered me in.
CHRIST IS RISEN! He is risen indeed!
Happy Easter! This month I’m publishing the song for free, and it’ll remain free for the rest of April.
